Dagmar Binder Layered Bags

In this class we will develop a unique and distinctive handbag with additional 3D elements: sculptural shapes that reach out beyond the basic form.

We will calculate shrinkage, develop a template and do the wool layout around it. After completing the basic form, additional layers will be attached, partially separated from the background by resist layers. You can open these up later to create a 3D surface. We will integrate prefelted handles seamlessly into the bag.

After completing the layout, you will felt, full and shape details by hand.

Materials needed:

  • 50 x 100cm needlefelt and 300g merino tops 18-21 microns.
  • For stabilization of the bag handles’ interior 2 x 80cm strands of strong, coarse wool (in a matching colour) are very useful.
  • For surface decoration you may also use silk fabric or fibres, ramie, woolen yarn or all kind of natural fibres.
