Contemporary Corsets Masterclass

Contemporary Corsets Masterclass

Create your own custom made pattern and construct a made to measure corset using traditional or modern materials.

Referencing corsets from 18th Century stays to Edwardian S-bends and cinched waists, you will learn about historical and present day materials used in construction. During the masterclass, you will complete your own individual mood board and corset pattern as well as a read- to-wear corset.

When you book please indicate your dress size so that the correct blocks can be prepared. Materials will be provided at cost price. If you want to bring your own material, please check for suitability by sending a swatch.

Day 1: On day 1 you will research the history of corsets and present day interpretations. You will create your own mood board, identifying suitable materials and consider the right design for your body shape. You will choose a block according to size and learn how to alter this to create your draft corset block and cutting pattern. There will also be the option of making a standard size corset rather than made to measure.

Day 2: On day 2 you will cut a toile from your pattern, sew it up and fit it. Alterations will be made at this point with the help of your tutor and your pattern will be adjusted and re-fitted. You will cut material, lining and interfacing ready for sewing.

Day 3: On day 3 you will learn about different boning qualities, fastening options and functional, decorative embroidery that you can incorporate into the corset. You will sew all layers together, adding bias channels if needed.

Day 4: Day 4 will see you completing the sewing of the corset body, checking fit and boning. You will add any decorative elements and start edging.

Day 5: On day 5 you will complete edging and eyelets or alternative fastenings.

Experience level: You need to be familiar with machine sewing; pattern cutting experience is an advantage but not necessary.
