Eugenie van Oirschot Millinery

Eugenie designs and makes hats which are architectural masterpieces. They are mathematical in their constructions and extremely clever in their design. She has developed a style of head wear that is unique; the cut of the fabric, the use of colour and geometric themes gives each hat an interesting story; each piece a work of Art.

Pleating and Weaving

Dutch designer Eugenie van Oirschot, has developed some gorgeous techniques for using straw braid, not just as a trim, but as the foundation for intricately pleated and woven hats. During this workshop she will invite you to discover the secrets of her techniques. For those who will join her on this journey,  basic sewing machine skills are an advantage.

Learning Outcomes

During this workshop you will learn how to:

  • work with 12 mm wide hemp braid on a normal sewing machine.
  • make ‘straw braid fabric’ and how to pleat and shape the fabric to create a headpiece.
  • weave the straw braid circular
  • work with stainless steel wire instead of millinery wire.

Eugenie will explain the different non-standard, straw braid techniques and guide you step by step through the process.
