Jeanette Sendler: Creative Pattern Cutting and Sewing

At the age of 16, Jeanette began a traditional apprenticeship in ladies’ tailoring in her mother country Germany. There she learned to produce ‘made to measure’ garments for private clients. After this intensive training she moved on to make costumes for a number of opera houses, and learned to extract details from the history of costume to enrich our everyday clothing. She therefore has over 30 years of broad and extensive experience in the art of creative pattern cutting and sewing.

Big Cat Textiles Newburgh Scotland Pattern Cutting and Sewing 1

The focus of this class is on:

•    fit
•    individual measurements
•    shape experimentation (e.g. bells, trumpet shape)
•    volume, swing and movement: radiating folds, pleats, focal   points.
•    symmetry and asymmetry

You will be encouraged to experiment with shapes: the cut and fit of the cloth. This includes geometrical shapes such as triangles, circles and rectangles. You will first learn how to take measurements and draft up your own personal bodice and skirt block pattern. You’ll learn how to manipulate these blocks into dynamic shapes inspired by historical and contemporary fashion.

You will manipulate at least one bodice and skirt pattern and develop a dress pattern: either all in one with a waistline or as an ensemble. You’ll also study and experiment with a variety of fashion details such as cuffs, pockets and different hemlines. You will be taken through the whole process of cutting and making up a toile, fitting and adjusting.
