Joan Baxter’s Weaving Water inspired by the Tay Estuary

17-21 July – Price: £450 plus £5.00 per day – lunch (optional)

In this class we will be working from students’ own photographs of water. We will explore different ways of interpreting the rhythms, reflections and transparent qualities of water in the medium of tapestry.

There are two possible objectives for the class, either:

  • to design and weave a small tapestry based around the theme from photographic sources;
  • or to develop several elements of the theme through observation, photography, design work and sampling, for a larger tapestry to be woven after the class.

The class is suitable for students who have some prior experience of tapestry and will include the following topics:

  • Making a tapestry design from photographic sources
  • Making a cartoon or plan to weave from
  • Colour sampling
  • Interpretive techniques

The film below was made during Joan’s class in Newburgh in 2016.
