This class combines printed elements with folding methods of structuring cloth, such as shibori and origami, to produce a range of experimental textile samples with potential application for fashion, interiors or textile art.

We will start by experimenting with methods of marking surfaces using sublimation printing and disperse dyes through using rubbings, stencils, drawing, painting and collage techniques. You will be introduced to foiling and will also be able to incorporate elements of photographic detail using methods such as image transfer paper.

As your work develops, we will be exploring of ideas of concealing/revealing through structuring, texturing and shaping your printed surfaces using methods such as pleating, folding, crumpling, crushing, making your own origami moulds and using elements of shibori techniques through heat setting.

This is an exploratory course suitable for all abilities. Those with some previous experience of these techniques will be able to focus on exploring a particular form, format or idea.

About the tutor

Caroline uses the historical, social and cultural associations of textiles and their ability to trigger memory to explore ideas and create thought-provoking pieces. Her work is displayed in public, corporate and private collections, and she has also undertaken site-specific commissions and responses to historic locations. Caroline’s practice draws on a wide range of techniques – imprinting, stitching, erasing and reworking, folding and unfolding – and explorations have also resulted in works which integrate textiles with other media, such as porcelain. We’re delighted to welcome her back to Big Cat Textiles for a third time.
