A small wearable using origami, heat setting and sublimation printing.

Follow variations on a folding pattern to create a two-part origami mould that can then be used to set forms in fabric through the use of heat setting. Create multiples of this unit to build up a small wearable neckpiece or 3D object. Enhance the form through the use of sublimation (heat transfer) printing on man-made fabrics.

Whilst the structures you will work with can be used to create a wearable or small object, there is potential in the techniques, once learnt, to apply to other projects and to incorporate stitch or text.

This is an exploratory course suitable for all abilities.

If you’d like to spend more time exploring printed textiles prior to developing your 3D form, you can attend ‘From collage to printed textiles using heat transfer’ – a three-day masterclass which takes place on the days prior to this class.

About the tutor

Caroline uses the historical, social and cultural associations of textiles and their ability to trigger memory to explore ideas and create thought-provoking pieces. Her work is displayed in public, corporate and private collections, and she has also undertaken site-specific commissions and responses to historic locations. Caroline’s practice draws on a wide range of techniques – imprinting, stitching, erasing and reworking, folding and unfolding – and explorations have also resulted in works which integrate textiles with other media, such as porcelain. We’re delighted to welcome her back to Big Cat Textiles.
