Ecological Methods of Using Natural Dyes with Michel Garcia

12-16 June – Price: £500 plus £5 per day lunch (optional)
This practical class will be mainly focused on the most ecological methods of using natural dyes on wool, silk and cotton.

Substantive dyes such as indigo, cutch and safflower will be presented, along with the exact methods of combining them, both together and with mordant dyes, in order to get a diversity of shades and effects.

From harvested blackberry roots and stems we will create our own cutch extract, for printing beige to reddish browns and black, as well as combinations with other colours.

Eventually, after learning how to build our own steamer of pipes, rolls and pots, we will discover how to fix our natural paintings and printings on textiles, in order to convert them onto real eco dyes.

Here’s what a class participant had to say about Michel’s class in 2014.

And here’s a short filmed conversation between Michel and a class participant in 2016.
