Straw, Feathers and Flowers – Summer Millinery with Jeanette Sendler

3-6 August – Price: £375 including most materials

This four day intensive summer millinery course will take place at Jeanette’s studio, Hat in the Cat, in Perth. Inspired by our collection of historical hats, you will work with our new hand carved blocks as well as a range of existing vintage blocks.

Summer Millinery Masterclass

Summer Millinery Masterclass

You will learn how to block sinamay, felt and buckram. You will wire, cover and trim your hats, focusing especially on traditional trimming, using petersham, feathers and straw. This will give you a comprehensive introduction to traditional millinery material and techniques. Our aim is to allow you to sample a range of media – stitch straw, felt, buckram, fabric and sinamay – and then choose which you would prefer to use for your final two hats, based on your own designs. These might include a theatrical hat, an everyday hat or perhaps a hat for that special occasion. We will be using traditional techniques and tools, but with a contemporary, freeform approach to design.

This Masterclass is suitable for everyone with a real interest in the art of the milliner. It is of particular relevance to those wishing to get into art or fashion college, those who aspire to become theatrical milliners, or those needing help or inspiration to complete a personal project. Jeanette, who has worked on the set of Outlander, an American TV series being filmed in Scotland, as well as with numerous theatre and opera companies around the world, will guide you along.

The course is restricted to 6 students, thus allowing for lots of individual tuition. During the week, you will sample material and trims and make two completed hats. Please speak to Jeanette or Alison if you need any more information.

If you wish to stay in Perth, we will be happy to provide you with a list of local accommodation.
