Weave a Scarf with Heather Shields

October, dates to be confirmed, £185 including some materials, plus £5 per day lunch (optional) (There will be a small class fee TBA).

During this exciting 3-day weaving workshop, participants will design and weave their own scarf, exploring colour and its interaction with simple weave structures to create unexpected and often surprising patterns.

A scarf is a brilliant and satisfying project for new and experienced weavers alike and the design can be as simple or as complex as desired. The main considerations will be to create something comfortable to wear that is reflective of your own creativity, a piece to be treasured or handed down to family members.

Heather will take you through the processes of:

* selecting yarn colours

* designing your scarf

* making a warp

* setting up a rigid heddle loom

* selecting simple weaving patterns

* the weaving of your very own scarf

* and the finishing of your final piece with some hand stitching or tassel techniques.

Heather will be on hand to provide demonstrations and one-to-one guidance, as well as provide a selection of weaving patterns and coloured yarns for you choose as a starting point. Participants are free to design whatever style of scarf they wish to reflect their own personal tastes and are also welcome to bring along any fabrics, yarns, materials, inspiration, sketches or colour examples which they would like to incorporate.

You will also be given technical notes so they can continue to build on what they have learned during the workshop.

No prior weaving experience is necessary as full instruction will be given.

Heather Shields is a textile designer and weaver, specialising in vibrant contemporary homeware and accessories. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Textile Design from Glasgow School of Art, and in December 2014 was selected to join the Craft Council’s Hothouse programme for emerging makers.

Heather’s affinity with weaving began at art school, where she immediately became fascinated with the physical practice and the endless possibilities for experimentation, through fibre, structure and colour. Her striking patterns and playful approach to colour reflect a variety of influences; mundane objects, patterns in nature and architecture are reoccurring themes within her work.
