Working with your own recollections and collected items, we will explore methods of printing from and onto small items of cloth, clothing and textile items. Using  sublimation printing and the heat press, print onto paper, cloth and clothing fragments to develop your ideas. Photocopy resist techniques will also be demonstrated introducing images from photographs as small inclusions.

Clothing is often alluded to as a ‘second skin’, and with strong links to identity, cloth and clothing involve not only touch but smell, sight and sound. Encapsulating the fragility of life and human experience through signs of wear and repair, clothing often acts as a metaphor for the body, bearing the traces of its usage and  former wearer(s). These concepts will be discussed with reference to a number of sources and will serve as the starting point for development of ideas and processes.

Students continuing on Cloth, Clothing and Memory 2 – Reshaping Cloth will be able to further develop ideas and technical processes.

About the tutor

Caroline uses the historical, social and cultural associations of textiles and their ability to trigger memory to explore ideas and create thought-provoking pieces. Her work is displayed in public, corporate and private collections, and she has also undertaken site-specific commissions and responses to historic locations. Caroline’s practice draws on a wide range of techniques – imprinting, stitching, erasing and reworking, folding and unfolding – and explorations have also resulted in works which integrate textiles with other media, such as porcelain. We’re delighted to welcome her back to Big Cat Textiles.
