This class begins to explore different approaches to the working sketchbook, looking at new ways of developing and extending ideas to help you gain a deeper understanding of what inspires and excites you, and how you can begin to use and develop this information in your individual art work.

In the morning, you will examine preconceptions about what the sketchbook can be, with a view to extending ideas about its possible functions, and how it can extend your existing practice. You will look at examples of a range of approaches and experiment with ways to begin the process and overcome fears, specifically centring around ‘the blank page’. You will play with methods of transforming expectations, thereby creating new connections, which can be individually selected and developed. After lunch, you will explore several different practical approaches, working with a range of experimental media on offer in the studio.

All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring along anything you particularly like to work with!
